European Commission Publishes Official Reauthorization of AO-Biotics® Amaferm® as Zootechnical Feed Additive

On September 8, the European Commission published the official renewal of authorization for AO-Biotics® Amaferm®. The Commission has reauthorized Amaferm as a safe feed additive for use in dairy cows. The reauthorization process, which began in 2016, required years of response to safety and technical questions brought forth by the Commission to BioZyme®. The recent positive ruling is a culmination of those requests and discussions.

Amaferm is a research-proven prebiotic designed to enhance digestibility. We produce Amaferm from a select Aspergillus oryzae (AO) strain through a multi-stage fermentation process. Amaferm is safe and efficacious across beef, dairy, sheep, goats, horses, poultry and swine. It has been proven through more than 180 research studies and field trials.

“The European Commission has approved the reauthorization of Amaferm, following our argumentation. This shows BioZyme’s capacity to respond to all safety and technical questions at the highest level. It is giving the customers the guarantee of buying a well-researched product that has been authorized by one of the most exigent bodies in our industry,” said Volker Altenbokum, Director of International Business Development for BioZyme.

BioZyme, a global leader in AO fermentation, sells AO-Biotics around the globe to distribution partners working to better animals’ lives. AO-Biotics, manufactured in BioZyme’s state-of-the-art fermentation facility in St. Joseph, Missouri, is currently available in 42 countries and on five continents.

As part of the reauthorization process, BioZyme completed a full genome sequence of its A. oryzae strain. This and other ongoing research efforts have led to the development of new products under the AO-Biotics brand. In addition to Amaferm, BioZyme now markets AO-Biotics® EQE, the first and only AO postbiotic developed specifically for layers.

“We are very proud of the work of not only our International Business Development Team, but our entire team,” said BioZyme President and CEO Lisa Norton. “Care that comes full circle is our company motto and is embodied by every one of our employees, from those who create the products in Saint Joseph to those who market it across the globe. We are grateful the European Commission recognizes our commitment to producing a safe, accurate and highly effective feed additive.”
